Wisdom Tooth Extraction at Public Hospitals in China: Step-by-Step Guide & Aftercare Tips

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, often need to be removed due to impaction, decay, or gum inflammation. Many people prefer to visit public hospitals in China for this procedure because of experienced medical staff, regulated pricing, and the ability to use medical insurance. This article walks you through the typical process of getting a wisdom tooth removed at a public hospital, along with essential post-operative care instructions.

1. Step-by-Step Process at Public Hospitals

Step 1: Registration

Start by registering at the hospital’s Oral Surgery Department. Registration can usually be done via the hospital’s official WeChat account, app, or in person at the service desk.

Step 2: Initial Consultation

A dentist will examine your mouth and ask about symptoms. Most cases require imaging to assess the wisdom tooth’s position and its proximity to nerves or bone.

Step 3: X-ray Imaging

You’ll be referred to the radiology department to take either a panoramic X-ray (OPG) or 3D CBCT scan, which provides detailed imaging for accurate diagnosis.

Step 4: Treatment Plan

Based on the scan, the dentist will determine whether your tooth can be removed immediately or if an appointment with a specialist is needed.

  • Simple Extractions:  If the tooth is straight and fully erupted, it may be removed the same day.

  • Surgical Extractions: : If the tooth is impacted, close to nerves, or angled, a minor oral surgery      might be required. This is usually scheduled for another day.

Step 5: Tooth Extraction

On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia will be applied. The surgeon may need to cut gum tissue, remove bone, or section the tooth before extraction.

Step 6: To Suture or Not?

  • No Stitching: If the wound is small and clean, stitches are not needed.

  • With Sutures: For larger wounds or to reduce bleeding risk, dissolvable or  removable stitches may be  placed. Follow-up is typically required after 7 days for suture removal.

Step 7: Payment & Insurance

After the procedure, you’ll settle the cost, including consultation, imaging, and surgical fees. Most public hospitals support medical insurance reimbursement; however, some services like CBCT scans may be self-funded.

2. Post-Extraction Care Instructions

Why Bite on Gauze?

After extraction, a piece of sterile gauze will be placed on the wound. You’ll need to bite down firmly for 30–60 minutes to:

  • Apply pressure to stop bleeding

  • Help form a stable blood clot

  • Protect the wound and prevent dry socket

Avoid spitting, rinsing, or touching the wound with your tongue during this period to avoid dislodging the clot.

Eating & Drinking

  • Do not eat for at least 2 hours post-op.

  • Avoid hot, spicy,  hard, or sticky foods for 24–48 hours.

  • Use the opposite side of your mouth when chewing.

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking for 3 days.

  • Stay hydrated and eat soft foods like porridge or yogurt.

Swelling & Pain

It’s normal to experience mild swelling or soreness within the first 1–2 days. Use cold compresses during the first 24 hours and take prescribed painkillers or antibiotics as directed.

Stitches & Follow-up

If you had stitches placed, you’ll need to return in about 7 days to have them removed (unless they are dissolvable). If you notice symptoms like severe pain, foul smell, or persistent bleeding, contact your doctor immediately.

3. Final Tips

Getting a wisdom tooth removed at a public hospital in China is a structured, professional process. By following the procedure and aftercare instructions closely, you can ensure safe healing and avoid complications. Always follow your doctor’s advice, and don’t hesitate to return for a follow-up if something doesn’t feel right.
